Many years ago I had a Sanders tuba that is a very similar instrument to yours. And the G (and Gb) on the upper staff was a barking dog on that horn. Third-valve by itself help slightly, but it didn't solve the problem. A tuning stick helped more. Practice and confidence helped more still.
But this note is always a problem, and hasn't been perfect on any BBb horn I've played.
I never tried the second-valve trick, but I will tonight. It's the same partial that makes the normally flat open Ab just above it. Neat!
