I know that Dennis Miller (Montreal Symphony Orchestra) uses F tuba for the Low F. They take a step farther though and use a 2 step 5th valve and play the low F will all the valves down. Because of the amount of resistance it dosen't take all of your air and it's easier to play for a longtime. I wouldn't worry about being scorned by the brass section. The Montreal section has no complaints with Dennis' playing!!
