I saw David Fedderly do it a few years ago on F, with the Baltimore Symphony, and it seems the most practical way of doing it. I heard a story of someone playing on a 4/4 C and sticking a bead in the shank of the mouthpice to make the bore a bit smaller so that it is easier to play.
