Hey Mark, I've not been able to detect a gap, or step, in my old King either.
As for affecting the wavelength: any gap, leak, or obstruction which affects the airflow will have an effect on the wave. Remember, the undisturbed column of air is the medium through which the sound wave propogates. The mouthpiece, receiver and leadpipe combination are so important because they are at the very beginning of that column, and any error introduced in that stage is just amplified as it travels through the horn.
