The horn would be fine for a larger middle schooler. It is a smaller bore horn so it is not hard to fill. It is also a very sturdy horn because it has lots of extra bracing and capping, unfortunatley that also makes it a bit of a heavy horn. the 12J is the same horn but with three valves so it is a bit lighter.
