If they're really dry or cruddy(goopy, gummy,gross;you pick) then I'll take them out, wipe them with a lint -free cotton cloth, oil and replace them. If it's just a daily oiling then just loosen the top cap enough to get the oil in at the top. Make sure the spring lines up correctly and tighten the cap. Capillary action should take care of the rest.
