After reading the replys, here are my observations:
1) If you drop oil through the top cap, much of it will be absorbed by the felt. If the valves have a really tight tolerance (Read:Yamaha), most of the oil that gets past the felt will not make it to the casing before exiting through a slide tube.
2) If you drop oil down the slides, you are likely to loosen up some tuning slide grease and send it into the valve casing (unless you have perfect aim - unlike most of us!).
3) The best solution is to remove the valve from the casing, wipe it down and oil it. Premature valve wear is caused by NOT oiling. Even the most mechanically challenged kid can learn how to do this correctly if the band director/music store will take the time to show them.
