Irregardless of if they decide to choose a player this time around or not, 6 players is a LOT for a "Finals" round. In addition another nine to semis? In addtion to whoever comes out of the prelims? Sound like at least 9 guys total (6 invites and three from the new audition rounds) in the finals to be fair to those who come from the new rounds. That realistically is going to turn the finals into a semi-final round. It would be very tough to go from 9 players to one and be fair.
I wouldn't be suprised if a few of the guys invited directly into rounds decline to audition. Given the current track record, and what it seems that the BSO is trying to accomplish, there could be another possibility of them not taking a tub(a)ist for a third time. Hopefully the new Maestro, who will have final say, will appoint a player to the chair, no matter what the audtion commitee turns over. As good as the players are that are doing the work, it is extremely difficult to continue with a "tuba player by commitee" for a professional orchestra trying to obtain a high consistent quality to their performances.
I wish all of those involved the best of luck and hope that the tuba community will see a new player permanently installed into such a high regarded position in the professional tuba playing realm.
