It seems to me that a horn that plays at A=440 with the slide all the way in would be undesireable. When talking about a horn pitched at 440 or 443 is this assuming that is the pitch with the slide all the way in? I would think that the pitch center for a horn should be set with the slide half way out, is this what you are talking about?

I know that for me to play in tune at A=440 on my King 2341, I pull the slide about 1.5 inches. I have been told that the first versions of the one-piece 2341 had to have the slide almost all the way out for most players to play in tune. They subsequently lengthened the horn by changing a couple of ferrules. Also, there seems to be quite a bit of variation as to where the main tuning slide needs to be depending on the player. I have noticed that I have to push the main slide in when I borrow a horn from the school where we practice. Just curious.
