But you asked about scanning software. I don't care for either of the packages--both seem to do a pretty miserable job. There's a third-party package called "SharpEye 2" that outputs NIFF, MusicXML and MIDI that does a very good job of scanning. See web site below.

However, remember that scanning music notation is quite unlike text OCR. OCR's done the job if it just gets the characters right. Music scanning is very complex and usually requires a fair amount of manual editing, regardless of the package used.
