I think some kind of toothpaste is useful for very, very mild lapping. But if that doesn't work you have to use lapping compound, which is more abrasive. You have to be careful to remove ALL of the lapping goo when you are done, or it will stay in the horn and cause problems with abrading things you did not intend.
