Please, use the toothpaste on your teeth! Lapping compounds have specific-grit material in a grease, so that there is some lubrication, and the grit is designed to gradually break down during the process, so that a very smooth surface is created after offending irregularities (high spots) are removed. Toothpaste, is not formulated this way, and is actually more abrasive than lapping compound, which is fine for your teeth(maybe), but not for your valves. Lemonade is safer for you to drink than gasoline, but don't try pouring it into the gas tank of your car.
