Kevin's is the right advice. 4 valves is a minimum for any tuba -
or euph for that matter. I use a YEP-321 in quintet, and had the 5th
valve added - it's the only way to keep the 4th slide adjusted for
F and Bb and still get low G through E in tune. And don't believe that
playing low notes up an octave is a viable option - that would defeat
the whole point of playing tuba. If you're considering getting a compensating
instrument, try it out as extensively as possible, preferably next to a non
compensating one, before paying the extra money. Some people like it, some don't.
I find whatever improvement in intonation it provides not worth the extra weight and stuffiness, complexity, and cost. Good luck.
