Let's see, Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" was set in 1906 Chicago, so the conditions in the factory would be about right. In fact, before OSHA, things were pretty dangerous in any heavy industry; my dad, who worked most of his life in a steel mill starting in the 30's was full of incredibly grisly stories. They kept me alert and alive when I did my stint in the 60's. His father, who worked in the mills starting in about 1918, wouldn't even talk about it.
