You've got that right!
We played an all-Tchaikovsky concert a year ago that kicked my butt. It required technical ability and musical sensitivity far beyond the usual band fare. And we played a concert last Fall of French mucic, much of which was transcribed from orchestra. The work of great composers shines through good transcriptions of their work, and it's just plain more fun to make good music than to make bad music.
And instead of being a color instrument as in much orchestral work, we are the utility contrabass, like the double basses in an orchestra. That means lots of notes.
