The common name for this stuff is Inderol, and you want to take the lowest dossage you can (maybe half of a 10mg tablet) 3-4 hours before you perform.
A professional trumpet player who has won a number of significant orchestral principal trumpet gigs said that at an audition early in his career he discovered that he was the only one of about 25 second round players who hadn't taken it. He has suggested it for players who are very nervous, but likes to wean them off of it after a couple of years.
A professional flutist we know well said she used it for auditions the first few years out of conservatory and it helped her win significant gigs. She said as she became established, she no longer needed it, but recommended it for her pupils who had significant problems with nervousness.
