I think that the vibration of the horn contributes significantly to the player's perception of the sound and pitch, and is important to the overall result. The sound is not "wasted" in any way, in fact a tuba's sound is not a very directional so anything coming off of the instrument's body is radiating "practically" the same as what's coming out of the bell except the player can hear it better. Isn't that fairly important?
