The music always belongs to the composer, first and foremost. You will note that some composers do not add a great amount of markings, while others fill the page, but the composer is the first and last word on how the piece should be played. Expression is great but not at the expenise of the composers wishes. No performer, no matter how talented or musical will ever know more about the piece than the composer. To play a great work is wonderful, but to compose a great work is historical.
