Best way I can think of to reduce the over-articulation problem is to think of eliminating the word "attack" from your vocabulary (the very word sounds aggeressive) and instead thgink of "starting" the note with the air. The tongue then becomes merely a release valve for the air rather than getting the heavy sledgehammer effect.
As for mouthpiece placement, I don't think anyone cares even if you place the mouthpiece on your ANKLE as long as you produce a good sound.
