Actually, as I understand it, the GG Contras in drum corps ARE twice the length of a G bass trombone. I remember our old friend Leland (sure miss his input, BTW) talking about practicing for contra by tying down the third valve on a BBb horn, which effectively makes it a GG tuba with no third valve.
I agree with your point, though. Common usage often supercedes correct terminology, and there's no point fighting it.
