Anyway, correct me if I'm mistaken, but the EEb term was used by manufacturers to distinguish their larger Eb tubas from their smaller Eb tubas as the demand for such instruments increased in, say the 1910's and 1920's. That's when these 20" bells and larger tapers were made over the 15-17" bell models.Compare the early 20th century Conns with the late 19th century ones, and you'll see why they wanted a bigger name for their bigger tuba.
Piano tuners have been arguing for decades over how to designate all the notes and octaves on the keyboard, why should they have all the fun??
