I am not in any way knocking any orchestral tuba playing or player. I have loved the orchestral gigs I have done. And i realize if you want a career playing tuba with a job that will pay the rent, provide bennies and a pension, a major orchestra is about the only way to go. (that or Uncle Sam's band) But, there are only about 40 - 50 full time orchestra gigs in the country (if that). Most other orchestras are per service contracts type gigs, where you might make 10K a year if your are lucky. So you have to have something else going; either a teaching job, a music sales job, or if you want to make real money some job outside of music and teaching altogether! I sort of feel the same way about msuic ed majors too. How many music teaching jobs are there in a school? Meanwhile colleges crank out music ed teachers like there is no tomorrow. Thousands a year. but that is another idea. ken k
