For me its not that I love classical music, but full-time playing opportunities in this country are limited to orchestra, military or an already-functining brass quintet. There is some work in the amusement park business, but I can't see myslef schloggin around in a band uniform. If you think its hard getting an orchestra job, when did you hear about a tuba opening in a brass quintet? Believe me, If I could get a gig with a WORKING brass quintet, I'd drop my orchestra job like a bad habit! Another possibility is a full time freelance career. This is very difficult and starts with many years of hanging out. Also the perception is this: in your 20's your a student; in your 30's an apprentice; in your 40's a journeyman. This is a lot of waiting for who knows what. Don't get me wrong, I love my work and couldn't be happier with a playing career, but there are few options.
