Rich Matteson pioneered the four-beat style on tuba. When I was just getting started in dixieland I was advised to get that record, period. I learned a lot from it. Years later my wife heard the re-issued Cd on the radio and said "he sounds like you". What a great wife she is!
I met a tubist named Steve Hanson some years ago who had studied with Matteson at North Texas State, and who could play that way all night with circular breathing. Steve, if you are reading this please let us know where you are.
