It doesn't appear that Mr. Curious is talking about musical shortcomings. He's talking about changes being made (to an instrument) that he did not request. And that, perhaps, these changes are best not done without discussion with the owner/player of said instrument. From what you describe of your own process with a customer, it appears that you, Joe, do _not_ make alterations without talking it over with the player. Which seems the appropriate thing to do. It seems that Mr. Curious was not asking for alterations to be done, nor was he asking for advice about alterations that might help/improve his playing.

Why you chose to expound upon matters unrelated to the topic, only you know. Which is fine; after all, this is a public forum.
