Boy, am I gonna catch 'heck' for this. At rehearsals, I do whatever the conductor says, but at performances 'the horn is louder than the stick.' If I have a REAL disagreement with the conductor, I nod politely in the rehearsal setting, then play the way I want to at performances. MOST conductors will respect your musical integrity and allow you your own interpretation. If it is a guest conductor, PFFFT! He (she) is gone in a coupla days. Your regular conductor should give you some discretion, UNLESS you are WAAAY off base.
