I don't get it. I own a boat load of Mahler 3rd's, including the beloved Bernstein/NYPO (which is far slower, by the way), and I certainly don't hear or feel any, "phlegmatic malaise". I also own the DG Eloquence Mahler 1st that you mention, I don't hear it as being terribly different from the rest of his cycle at all. In fact, both the DG and Philips M1's are very consistant. Oh well! To each their own, and as they say, mileage may vary.
