Acid wash

I've noticed several posts concerning acid wash of a horn, and how it really cleans a lot of "gunk" (tuba toe jam?) out of a horn. How does it not hurt the horn, the finish, or eat up all the solder? One or two posters have mentioned muriatic (hydrochloric)acid. If the concentration is so mild that it doesn't hurt the brass, what does the acid do that hot water won't?
