If you can see it from the outside of the horn, it's gone too far already. RR is caused by the leaching of zinc from brass by calcium salts present in saliva, leaving a spongy sort of copper behind. You may want to consider getting yourself to a good repairman for some patching or replacement in the near future.

CLR's active ingredient is citric acid (read: super strong lemon juice); any "de-limer" is going to be some sort of acid. In addition to removing calcium salts, acids will also leach a small amount of zinc away.

Since your rot is in removable slides, I'd take them off the horn, prop them upright and fill them with white vinegar and let them soak for a day or so. Rinse, lube and replace. Vinegar (acetic acid) is a lot less aggressive than CLR or other de-limers, but it'll do the job.

Good luck!
