I do not think your premise is silly at all. I do not think the vocal range is the major deciding fact. The size and shape of the oral cavity, the embouchure, the size of the sinus passages, regardless of the person's vocal range, will have an effect on a person's overall tone quality.
A player's concept of sound seems to influence their tone production. In ear training as a freshman, I noticed that my trombonist buddy sounded like a trombone when he sang, and Cindy the oboist sounded rather nasal, just like her oboe. The sax players were the worst at ear training, and the tuba and clarinet players seemed to do the best. Did these students model their vocal sound after their instrument, or did their inherent vocal sound influence their choice of instrument to play?
