Joe wasn't really attacking Tony, but offering him a shoe just in case it fit. Nothing in what he said suggested that be helieve it would fit--he left that for Tony to decide. But I was saying that in defending Tony against a perceived attack from Joe, the evidence you offered agreed with Joe, and I wondered about that.
As for my conductor, I've never asked permission to drop octaves, and I don't do it except in certain rare circumstances, as described elsewhere. I don't know his opinion on the matter. With me, it's moot anyway because I'm not particularly good in the low register and I know it. Even if I was great, I'd still not do it, though, because I just can't think of any musical justification for it. If he asked me to do it, I'd do my best.
