The student should do whatever his college teacher recommends. Of course in most cases that would mean getting a CC if possibe. This doesn't mean that you can't be a success on a B flat, but it' very important too follow your teachers advice and if you can't find another teacher or another carrer. I once knew a young man who had visions of his ideal trombone with such and such mods. I asked him if that was what the teacher at Curtis (where he was headed the next year) played. He said no, so I asked what did the teacher at Curtis play. Back then it was a Bach 42B. So I said for Curtis he was best off getting a 42B. Later when he had his own gig I said he could get whatever he wanted but that the horn is just a tool. Save the dream horn for the mantlepiece.
