Frankly, I think there's some validity in what you say. I play Eb, only because I can't justify the expense of owing both a bass and contrabass tubas at this time in my life. In general, good F's are probably better for soloing, and certainly more secure for the really high stuff such as the Berlioz "Romeo & Juliet", and "Bydlo". On the other hand, because of the characteristics that Tracy just pointed out, Eb's can be really handy for most quintet literature. In the best of all possibly worlds, a tubaist should probably have at least three horns: one for symphony/band; one for quintets, and one for the really high stuff. Then again, there's always Harvey Philips to prove me wrong.
