I'm a high school band director conducting David Gillingham's "Heroes Lost and Fallen" for our festival in March. The piece has a brass choir section that requires all instruments to be muted (straight mutes).
This is my second year at this school...and the director before me purchased four King Sousaphones (sorry...don't recall the model # offhand) and not a SINGLE tuba! :( Since I don't have the funds to purchase a tuba at the moment (and certainly not four of them!), what does this group of tuba-minds suggest I do about the muted section?
Is there such thing as a sousaphone mute? (I have yet to see this!) If not, is there anything I could put in its place to get the same type of sound? Ideas anyone? Anyone?
