The sad things to me is when a conductor is so timid or so ignorant in music theory that they'll stick to the written score no matter how obvious a mistake is (though I don't know how obvious this mistake is because I don't have the score). I had one choral conductor who, in a simple D major chord in a Haydn choral piece, made the sopranos sing an F natural against an F# because the accidental was omitted from the score. It was so jarring that it distracted everyone in the chorus, but he wouldn't change it. In some musical periods this would be acceptable harmonic practice, but in Haydn?
