Silver plating, a few microns, means that you have very little of a much harder metal coating a brass instrument. Lacquer, particularly on the bell flare, where it is on both sides, is normally as thick as the metal itself or more so, so that the thickness of lacquer would tend to dampen higher frequencies within a tone, giving the perception of a darker sound. There is the possibility of negating these differences though with differences of brass thickness, construction, etc., so it is very difficult to come up with actual recorded evidence of anything. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
