Nickel is harder than brass or silver. Nickel plating looks great when it's new, and it can look good for many years if you keep it clean. It corrodes where you touch it into a dull gray that does not ever become shiny again. Because it is so hard, you can clean it up pretty well with fine steel wool or Brillo. Sometimes an older Nickel-plated instrument will peel and flake, especially around dents. Nickel can also cause an allergic reaction in some people who are especially sensitive to it. A really old and worn nickel-plated instrument can look pretty bad, as can a lacquered instrument. But old lacquer can be removed, and nickel plating cannot.
Saint Petes have been discussed here extensively. They are just the right size, but not as durable as one might wish.
