Here is the straight scoop.

Nickel plating is a cheap self-leveling durable finish that requires the minimum of polishing of the base metal prior to its application.

Nickel is hard and durable as long as it is a good quality plate job.

Nickel will oxidize forming a gray like patina that can be a little unsightly but not a serious problem to worry about.

Nickel that is oxidized can be buffed out by a skilled finisher on a polishing lathe using the polishing compound known as "white diamond".

Nickel plating should never be cleaned with steel wool, brillo-pads or scotch bright if you ever want it cleaned up and looking good in the future.

Nickel plating can be removed.

Nickel plated instruments that are badly damaged can only de repaired to like new condition by chemically removing the plating prior to addressing the damaged base metal followed by polishing and replating in what ever finish is desired or just lacquering the polished substraight.
