I had a chance to try out the PT-7P and the VMI counterpart at ITEC 98. The PT-7P was far better then the piston valve VMI counterpart. The VMI I played on was a slightly below average instrument. The sound quality was inconsistent as was the playability. The PT-7P was fantastic, especially considering the cost of it's competition, namely the Nirschl 6/4 and the Yorkbrunner. I still think the Yorkbrunner has them all beat. If only the cost could somehow be more reasonable.

The Culbertson rotary version was a different story though. The horn had a wonderful ring in it's sound. It also appeared to be a much more consistent playing horn than the VMI piston version.

These were observations made in a poor environment though. I was at a conference competing with the sounds of many other horns being tested, and I only tried one example of each horn. Your mileage may vary.
