while I've never tried this, I've often wondered if you couldn't vise up the plates as you have described and then stretch the neoprene (so that it becomes thinner), then lower it into place, then release it so that it returns to its original (fatter) shape. Trim above and below the plate, trim the travel, and you're done. No pushing or squeezing (which means no tools to scratch the parts). Have you ever tried this? I'd be curious how well it would work.
