I just use the screwdriver to do acheive the same goal. I push straight down on the neoprene with a (not particularly sharp-bladed) screwdriver, compress the neoprene, and (again) "roll" it into place, while compressed.
I think if you tried to squeeze the neoprene with pliers or something, the pliers would just end up being an obstruction while trying to do the job.
