I'm agreeing and adding that I just don't know of ANY type of instrument that was NOT developed through "trial and error", rather than "science". Further, I've observed over the years that acousticians who make comments about instruments never build "physical" (forgive the pun) alternatives to those instruments about which they have offered comments.

P.S. YES! YES! The C.S.O. York INDEED is a tuning nightmare like most jumbos, but its FLEXIBILITY (pulling pitches) without its tonal characteristic being lost is one of its remarkable characteristics. Further, strong (the right amount of "strong") high overtones are what make remarkable instruments remarkable. As an example, do any of you electric bass doublers turn the "midrange", and "treble" knobs all the way down and the "bass" knobs all the way up? (of course not)
