Hmmm...my tape of the Doug Yeo performance with the Boston Pops includes a radio(?) interview with Doug and John Williams sitting in the same room. The interviewer asks what differences there are in register, etc. between the bass trombone and tuba, and Doug goes on to explain that the trombone doesn't have the benefit of piston or rotary valves, but has to rely on a cumbersome slide. He then says that John rewrote ten bars in the coda that were fiendishly difficult, and that he wasn't all that happy with to begin with.
