Isn't the St. Pete nickel plated brass? Also, I think that the 8D, along with other French horns, comes in nickel silver, aka "German silver." This is an alloy like brass, but with nickel added to give it a silver color. It also is supposed to be more corrosion resistant than plain brass.

I have seen many tubas with nickel silver slide tubing, braces, leadpipes, and valve casings. In fact my primary horn is red brass with nickel sliver for all of the mentioned parts. I wonder what a solid nickel silver tuba would sound or play like. Does anyone know of any that have been made. For a fair comparison one would have to be made using the same design as an existing brass tuba. For example, make a nickel silver Meinl-Weston 2145 and compare it to a brass 2145.
