Since I started buying $$$$$ tubas, I have gotten in the habit of laying my case or gig bag beside my chair. The tuba is layed on the bag or in the case when it is not in my lap. These horns are still in mint condition. Here's a better idea: buy a thin exercise mat, about 2X4. when your tuba ain't layin' on it, roll it up and put it in your bell. In the pit or close quarters, sit tuba on the bottom bow between your legs. If you want to be a bell sitter, take a piece of 1/4 clear plastic tubing, cut it down one side, and rap it around the bell bead. This keeps the finish from getting ruined over the long haul.
