The question I always come back to is - "Can I be a proffesional musician, and have a full-time day job that isn't music?" Defining oneself as a professional is a term which holds very little meaning. I would say that anyone who is in the AFM or receives a W2 for playing music is a proffesional, and so I would qualify. Does this mean I will be able to support myself and family purely by playing my instrument...no, to do so would require so much time and general pain that all the joy would be sucked from music. I choose to hold a day job, not exclusively because of my level of musicianship, but because of my (1) desire to live a relatively well rounded life and (2) knowing that adding the amount of stress to make a living in music is very likely to drain the joy from it.
