I bought a seat for mine so don't know anything about checking it. While explaining the location of the seat is sometimes tedious, and that yes it does have a ticket, once on the plane everything was fine.

Just a thought here, but if any of the steward/stewardesses tell you you have to check the tuba as cargo or luggage, there does not seem to be any rule against having an instrument of that size on the plane (according to a pilot when asked when I flew). That was part of the hassling I got. Just stay firm and you will have no problems.
