I do know that the bottom bows on modern B&H tubas are frightfully thin (I can dent one with moderate pressure from my thumb) with shorter caps that was previously the practice on the old Imperial line, which were built like the proverbial battleship. Further, the ascending tubing from the bottom bow no longer has a cap or guard strip. Is this because B&H considers the removal of material beneficial to the sound or because it is cheaper or makes the tuba less durable?

To answer the point of adding metallic mass; why not a fiberglass overlay on a bow guard?
