In 1971, I traveled to Bloomington Indiana where Harvey Phillips graciously took me to a local music store to try out three samples of the Conn 2J, a new, 3/4 size CC tuba modelled after the (i believe) 1940's era CC which was his main horn throughout his career.
Conn had taken shortcuts in manufacturing the new instrument, to Mr. Phillips' dismay, but it did play well, and was a more open instrument than Mr. Phillips'. His instrument was not a model 3J. The 3J was a model which appeared, I believe in the 1980's, at the earliest.
