Valve bore variations

I shamelessly confess to being the owner of a St. Pete, for which I payed about $400. I think that was a fair price, considering that I like the tone of this instrument. What I don't like is of course the valves, which are in an extremely bad shape. Naturally, I'd like to explore the possibility to exchange the valves. Now for my question(s)?

If I could find a valve set (used or new) for a price within my limited resources, and this would have a bore 1 to 2 mm smaller or bigger than the original, what effects would this have?

I have been in contact with several of the makers of big tubas, and the best offer so far comes from Rudolf Meinl. Does anyone have anything to sell, or tips where to look or ask?

Sven
